MUSEUM & BAR

The eastern defense tower of Malmöhus castle is connected to its surroundings in this project proposal, but is at the same time developed to work as an independent part of Malmö museum. In order to preserve as much as possible of the tower, the adjacent rampart is used for accessible circulation, exhibitions and a café/bar. The tower will thus be alive both day and night.

A FORGOTTEN TOWER?

The eastern tower at Malmöhus castle has, like the castle itself, a rich history. Since its construction in the early 16th century, it has been used for defense purposes, for prisoners, as emergency housing, and as a museum. It has the capacity to show different periods and layers of society historically, which together with its authenticity and patina makes it worthy of preservation. The existing sequence arriving to the inner circular space in the tower has a special character both in terms of space and light/darkness. Those characteristics have been an inspiration for the addition to the tower.

However, the tower’s functional value today is low and it is disconnected from both the city and the museum. This project aims to connect the tower better to its surroundings but at the same time make it work as a independent part of the castle island. A bridge from the east will connect the tower (and the museum) to the city. The tower also gets a new entrance from the west which will serve visitors coming via the museum courtyard. The adjacent rampart is used to create spaces for circulation, exhibitions and a café/wine bar. This way, the tower can be alive both day and night.
